Sue’s Best Ever Chocolate Frosting


  • ½ pound (2 sticks, or 1 cup) butter, softened. Can be salted or unsalted butter
  • 1 pound (or 500 grams, or 4-1/2 cups) powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 to 2 tsp milk (if frosting is stiff)


  1. Using a flat beater attachment on low speed, start mixing butter and gradually add sugar and cocoa powder.
  2. Once combined, add salt and vanilla and turn speed up to medium.
  3. Allow frosting to whip until it is fluffy.
  4. If the frosting seems too stiff to spread, beat in 1 to 2 teaspoons of milk.
  5. If you aren’t using the frosting right away, cover the surface with plastic wrap, as this is a crusting frosting.
